The next morning, Alysson came fairly early in the day. There was no set pattern to when she might arrive, but Riggs preferred it when she was there in the morning or the evening because the weather would turn cool. He walked with her again, and they took a very similar route, this time not picking up any other dogs at all—which was unusual—but just walking along the street. Alysson was kind and waited patiently for Riggs to sniff and make his mark.

The scent of water ahead of them grew stronger. They passed under the trees. Soon they came to a place where there was more traffic and more pavement, and the woman moved confidently.

And that’s when Riggs smelled Archie.
